What starts out as "just another teen horror flick" actually gets better as it goes along, which may have to do with the fact that the writers (C. Courtney Joyner, Randall Frakes) and director (Bradford May) have done a handful of horror films in the past.
It begins poorly with a group of teens heading out to a rave in a barn in the woods (and we're treated to all sorts of so-so dialogue and drug talk) only to get into trouble when they, in a I Know What You Did Last Summer kind of way, hit a bloodied girl on the way home.
When they attempt to help her they are soon chased by a group of Satanic cultists (who wear the pre-requisite hoods and masks) but, thankfully, the story takes a turn about midway through (when they arrive at a small town with a secret - guess what, they're in on it!) and becomes an enjoyable time.
While this has a by-the-book premise and is fairly predictable at least it tries to be something more than your typical "jokey teen slasher flick" that's been glutting the video market since Scream and it's certainly watchable (and better than expected) thanks to some mild thrills (the woods chase isn't bad), a few okay twists in the script and generally fine performances. Plus we get B-movie favourite Tim Thomerson in a side role as the gruff sheriff.
Acceptable B-movie fare.
