After Death starts out great; a mix of voodoo, creatures like Bava's Demoni and some great gore effects. Unfortunately that ends quite quickly and the actual zombie movie begins - the creatures change, the originality dies and the characters get much worse. That's not to say the movie isn't still enjoyable, it's got some interesting death scenes, a few passable zombie makeups and an almost cannibal movie feel given the environment (a deserted island). Of course, then you get to the terribly abrupt ending, which explains nothing and gives no closure to any of the events.
It really is hard to review a film like this because it's obviously only meant for a certain crowd, and there's a damn good chance no one but that crowd could stomach this. The question is though, does it offer enough gore, cheese and sleaze to satiate it's intended audience? I'd have to say the answer is "no". This subgenre has produced some great films, certainly much better than this one, so it'd be a strain to take this over most of the others readily available now - especially when you consider how derivative of the others this one is.
It should also be noted that this film has nothing to do with Fulci's Zombie, or even it's odd sequel Zombi 3, the actual film here is After Death, Zombie 4 was just tacked on to help sales. (Red)
